Director, National Industrial Relations and Counsel

The Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) is Canada's leading association for independent film, television and digital media producers. The CMPA works on behalf of its members to promote and stimulate Canada’s multi-billion dollar production industry.

 

We are seeking a dynamic lawyer with four to five years of labour and employment law experience to join our team as Director, National Industrial Relations and Counsel. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with members and stakeholders to ensure labour relations stability within the film, television and digital media industry
  • Provide legal research and advice to the CMPA and its members on labour, employment, immigration, health and safety and human resource-related issues
  • Manage the day-to-day administration of the CMPA’s national and regional collective agreements
  • Direct preparations for and play a key role in the negotiation of collective agreements
  • Oversee litigation, including preparations for and attendance at arbitrations, and the management of external counsel
  • Advance the CMPA’s federal and provincial labour- and immigration-related government relations files 
  • Represent the CMPA and its members in grievance proceedings
  • Lead and expand the various health and safety initiatives to which the CMPA is party
  • Conduct training on pertinent labour- and employment-related matters

 

Education and Experience 

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
  • Between four and five years' labour and employment law experience
  • Demonstrated success in the handling of highly complex labour relations challenges
  • Film, television and digital media industry experience is considered an asset 

 

Other Requirements 

  • Ability to travel on semi-regular basis
